A camera module, a mobile terminal having the same, and an image processing method thereof are provided to extend compressed thumbnail image data, to generate thumbnail image, and to store the compressed thumbnail image data naturally for reducing time for displaying/compressing/storing the thumbnail image data. An image processing method of a mobile terminal comprises the steps of: photographing an object(S31); generating image data from a light signal of the object(S33); outputting main image data by processing the generated image data and outputting thumbnail image data by scaling the generated image data(S35); receiving/compressing the main image data(S37); judging whether the compression of the main image data is finished(S39); receiving/compressing the thumbnail image data which is temporarily stored in a thumbnail buffer(S41); storing the compressed main image data and the compressed thumbnail image data(S43); asking for image data display(S45); extracting/extending the compressed thumbnail image data(S47); and displaying the extended thumbnail image data(S49).
