A composition comprising fucoxanthin or extracts of marine plants containing the same is provided to prevent or treat fatty liver disease by preventing accumulation of cholesterol and neutral fat in the liver, and descending absorption of cholesterol from food. A composition for preventing or treating fatty liver disease comprises fucoxanthin or extracts of marine plants containing the fucoxanthin which are prepared by extracting marine plants in water, alcohol, hexane, ethyl acetate, isopropyl alcohol or a mixture thereof at 10-50 deg. C for 1-48 hours, and is a pharmaceutical or health food composition, wherein the marine plants include brown seaweed, sea tangle, gulfweed and laver; and the daily dosage of fucoxanthin is 0.01-50 mg/kg for non-oral administration or 0.01-100 mg/kg for oral administration in the pharmaceutical composition, or 0.01-100 mg/kg for the health food composition. Further, the composition for preventing or treating hyperlipidemia is manufactured by mixing the fucoxanthin or the brown seaweed extract with pharmaceutically acceptable carriers.
