A method for treating an optical fiber comprising a starting procedure for starting a treatment for exposing an optical fiber to atmosphere containing deuterium, and an ending procedure for monitoring the loss by the optical fiber of propagation light having a wavelength of 1714 nm or in the vicinity thereof and ending exposure when the variation in loss falls outside a predetermined range. The loss can be monitored by allowing propagation light having a wavelength of 1714 nm or in the vicinity thereof to enter from one end of the optical fiber while exposing the optical fiber to atmosphere containing deuterium, for example, and then monitoring the propagation light exiting from the other end of the optical fiber and measuring the loss. An optical fiber exhibiting excellent hydrogen resistant characteristics can thereby be produced surely and inexpensively. ® KIPO & WIPO 2008
