The present invention relates to a method and a device for separating constituents from a liquid, wherein said liquid is passed along the surface of a membrane as a feed flow and is separated into a concentrate flow and a permeate flow. It is an object of the present invention to provide a method by which biofouling of a membrane can be reduced or even prevented by inducing an electrostatic field and/or an alternating magnetic field in the membrane. Another object is to influence or improve the retention properties of a membrane.
