PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device and a starting method preventing illuminance degradation and a short service life caused by abnormal discharge when starting a high-voltage discharge lamp. SOLUTION: This high-voltage discharge lamp lighting device comprises a bridge circuit for generating AC current from DC voltage to supply it to the high-voltage discharge lamp; a bridge control circuit for driving the bridge circuit; and a starting circuit for generating starting pulse from the output of the bridge circuit to apply it to the high-voltage discharge lamp. In a predetermined period for starting the high-voltage discharge lamp, the bridge control circuit drives the bridge circuit repeatedly and alternately at first frequency and second frequency lower than the first frequency, and the starting circuit applies the starting pulse to the high-voltage discharge lamp during the period of the first frequency.
