A method and an apparatus for inputting characters of a keypad in which multiple characters are allocated to a single key are provided to improve a character input speed of a user by setting a cursor shift time according to the character input speed of the user. A keypad(110) includes keys and each key is allocated multiple characters. A display unit(120) displays a corresponding character in response to an input of the first key included in the keypad. A storage unit(130) accumulatively stores a key input time taken for inputting the displayed character and a key input number. A cursor shift required time setting unit(140) calculates a key input speed by using the accumulated key input time and key input number, and sets a cursor shift required time for entering a next character standby mode based on the key input speed. After the key is inputted, a controller(150) checks whether or not the set cursor shift required time has lapsed, and when the cursor shift required time has lapsed, the controller shifts the cursor.
