The system has a sensor for detecting the boundaries (6) in a roadway (4), where an evaluation unit (16) is coupled with the sensor. The evaluation unit is coupled with an output unit and/or with an actuator for the output of a warning signal to a vehicle driver. The sensor has two cameras (8,12), which are oriented forward in the driving direction, such that the different surrounding regions of the vehicle are detected. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a lane change warning system.
