PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve characteristic control device for an internal combustion engine capable of suppressing the occurrence of a misfire or knock when the absolute angle of an operating angle of an intake valve is uncertain. SOLUTION: An ECU determines whether the absolute angle of the operating angle of the intake valve is uncertain or not (step S110). When the absolute angle of the operating angle is uncertain, a phase range of valve timing with a possibility of causing the misfire or knock is estimated (steps S130, S140), and a valve timing variable mechanism is driven so that the valve timing is within a predetermined intermediate phase range (step S150).
