Apparatus and method for heating a starting material

An assembly (1) for heating a raw material (5, 6) and especially calcined petroleum coke, to produce an anode (4) for fused-salt electrolysis, has a mixture/shaping system (8) to shape the material into anodes for firing in an anode ring furnace (3). The material is initially heated by exhaust gas in a heat exchanger (11), taken by a feed channel (12) from the ring anode furnace. Fractions are transferred to the mixture/shaping system to give the unfired anodes.
