The extinguisher has a housing (10), an incoming pipe (11) to the device, which has a cross-sectional area for guiding incoming exhaust gas, and an outgoing pipe (12) with another cross-sectional area for guiding exiting exhaust gas. A widening transition is provided from the former cross-sectional area to a cross-sectional area (Q) of the housing and a narrowing transition is provided from the housing cross-sectional area (Q) to the latter cross-sectional area. An independent claim is also included for an exhaust gas system with a device for extinguishing flame.
