PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress consumption of electric current of a gradation controlling type thermal printer and to miniaturize an electric power part. SOLUTION: In the thermal printer wherein 4-bit gradation data or 8-bit gradation data are converted to a plurality of continuous 1-bit data, and by re-writing the one bit data for a plurality of times during 1-dot printing processing, gradation is expressed by changing the density of printing by dot unit, the one bit data for one line are divided into a plurality of groups, and a controlling means for performing time sharing transmission of the data to a shift register of a thermal print head through a plurality of data lines is provided, and on every time when one group data is transferred to the shift register, it is composed so that it may latch and latch off to perform the time sharing printing. As there is no possibility of energizing simultaneously electric current in the whole heat generating body, the peak electric current can be reduced. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
