PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent or mitigate a damage of an MR head generated when the MR head passes through a TA occurrence part on a magnetic disk. SOLUTION: At initial defect registration, X±A tracks are registered in the radial direction around the TA occurrence part and Y±B sectors (or bites) are registered in the circumferential direction (primary registration) with respect to places decided as the TA occurrence part 100, and successively, extent of±several tens to several hundreds of tracks in the radial direction around a track 110 wherein the TA occurrence part 100 is detected, and also whole sectors (or bites) in the circumferential direction are registered (secondary registration). Further, a cylinder 120 in an area corresponding to the same radius position as that of the secondary registration is registered (third registration) with respect to whole disks 210 other than the disk wherein the TA occurrence part 100 is detected. When a data using capacity of the magnetic disk drive exceeds a predetermined rate with respect to a total capacity, the third registration and secondary registration are released and excluded from the TA registered place.
