PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an object recognition method for realizing the improvement of recognition precision for an object of complicated shape with a little calculation load. SOLUTION: The outline of the object is extracted from an acquired image (a step S1), and featured values which are constant for rotation or magnification/reduction in a picture are extracted for each of index points arranged in the outline (steps S3 to S5). The featured values are indexed according to the positional relation of each of the arrangement standard of the index points (a step S6), and a preliminarily obtained already known pattern is compared with the corresponding relation of indexes (steps S7, S8). The similarity of the corresponding relations is defined as the degree of matching, and a pattern matched with the object is selected by using corrected similarity under consideration with the similarity (steps S9 to S13). The rotary amounts of the pattern in the picture is estimated on the basis of the shift amounts of an approximate curve used at the time of calculating the the degree of matching (steps S14, S15).
