Latex is preserved by treating it while in a non-alkaline condition to remove carbon dioxide, as by blowing air through, or by aeration or boiling under reduced pressure or by spraying or running the latex in a thin stream while exposed to the air. The treatment is effected without substantial evaporation of water. The latex, after tapping, may be treated with a neutral or acidic preservative, e.g. formaldehyde, before the treatment, or unpreserved latex is treated with ammonia or other alkali preservative such as potassium hydroxide or trisodium phosphate immediately after the treatment. Other preservatives such as arsenic oxide, hydroxylamine hydrochloride, ethyl mercury chloride or sodium pentachlorphenate may be added.
