PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming an image and an image display apparatus to obtain high-quality image display with high contrast and preferable visibility in an optical writing image display apparatus using a polar display element and an optical switching element. SOLUTION: A controlling means 3 of the optical writing image display apparatus 10 controls in such a manner that when a second polar pulse is to be applied after a first polar pulse is applied, the effective value of the voltage applied on the region of a polar display element 5 corresponding to the light irradiation region of an optical switching element 4 is equal to or higher than the threshold of the polar display element 5 and that the effective value of the voltage applied on the region of the polar display element 5 corresponding to the non-irradiation region is equal to or lower than the threshold.
