Lightweight piston with gudgeon pin bearing is made of ceramic with carbon fibre reinforcing

A lightweight piston, for an IC engine, is made of carbon fibre reinforced ceramic and includes the bearings for the gudgeon pin. The bearing is formed by shaped layers of carbon fibre ceramic with an outer hat shaped support (7) and an inner T-shaped multiple layer (8) bonded into a supporting structure. The piston skirt (3) has a lipped top end (12) to provide a support for the piston crown (2).
