PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a semiconductor laser device which reduces a manufacturing cost of optical disk device or the like, and to provide its driving method. SOLUTION: A laser beam is emitted from a laser diode oscillation region 19. A refractive index variable region 18 adjoins the laser diode oscillation region 19 in a laser outgoing direction. As a refractive index at the refractive index variable region 18 is independently changed by independently changing the amount of a carrier to be implanted to the refractive index variable region 18, the refractive index changes at a portion where the laser beam passes in the refractive index variable region 18, by which an image of a far view area is changed.
