Optical system has at least a light source for emitting useful light, at least a optical unit and a device for phantom light suppression. The phantom light suppression device comprises a shield against external light which is allocated to the optical unit. The shield covers the optical unit at least partially on its emission side, while on the opposite side to the shield the optical system is at least partially free from shielding. The invention also relates to a display with a multiplicity of pixels, whereby at least a portion of the pixels form a light source for an inventive optical system.
