Thiophenols and/or aromatic disulphides are produced by reducing an aromatic sulphonic acid with elementary phosphorus, in the presence of iodine. In Example 1, a mixture of p-chlorobenzene sulphonic acid and iodine is dehydrated with phosphorus trichloride, and then treated with red phosphorus. Water is then added and, after 3 hours, the mixture is steam distilled to isolate p-chlorothiophenol. In Example 2, a mixture of p-chlorobenzene sulphonic acid, iodine and phosphorus trichloride is reacted with molten white phosphorus, in the temperature-range 80 DEG -100 DEG C., to give p-chlorophenyl disulphide (not isolated). Water and a further quantity of molten white phosphorus are then added. The mixture is then steam-distilled to isolate p-chlorothiophenol. Examples 4, 5, 7 and 8 relate to the producion of thiophenol, 2,4,5-trichlorophenol, 2-thionaphthol, and a mixture of o-, m- and p-methylthiophenols, respectively.
