The evaluation and control unit (10) determines the mass of an object with which collision has occurred. It does this from the potential across the crystals of the collision detection sensor (9, 11, 12) as a result of collision, and from the vehicle speed. The object is classified in accordance with the mass obtained. In accordance with the class assigned, an associated safety device (14) is activated.
