The retarder has a rotor (101) comprising coils (107) mounted on a shaft (102). A stator is mounted opposite to the rotor. A generator (106) is mounted on an end of the shaft for supplying the coils of the rotor. A rotating ventilator (108) is driven by the shaft for creating air currents flowing towards the coils. The ventilator has a disengaging unit (111) for preventing the ventilator from being driven by the shaft.
