PURPOSE:To provide the liquid crystal display device which has a high front surface contrast, an excellent visual angle characteristic, is colorless in both white and black display parts and has excellent visibility by having plural sheets of specific phase difference plates. CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal display device, which has at least a liquid crystal cell, a pair of polarizing plates and the phase difference plates, has at least >= two sheets of the phase difference plates having >=1.10 alpha, when the wavelength dispersion value alpha of the double refractive index DELTAn is expressed by equation alpha=DELTAn (450nm)/DELTAn (600nm). The double refractive index DELTAn (450nm) denotes the double refractive index DELTAn to light of 450nm wavelength. The phase difference plates which have >=1.10 wavelength dispersion value alpha of the double refractive index DELTAn consist preferably of polymers contg. sulfur, a halogen atom, etc. The more specific examples of the polymers of this kind include polarylene sulfone, polyarylene sufide, etc. The retardation value of the phase difference plates having >=1.10 wavelength dispersion value alpha of the double refractive index DELTAn are preferably in a 400 to 1200nm range. |
