The piston (10) has a plasma-electrolytically-generated wear-resistant coating in the area of its topmost ring groove (16). The wear-resistant coating has a roughness of about 1.5 micro meter, preferably 0.8 micro meter. The wear-resistant coating has a thickness of about 20 micro meter, in particular about 10 micro meter. An independent claim is also included for the method of coating the piston for an internal combustion engine.
