In an electron spin echo storage system the echo pulse is detected by its effect on a beam of polarized light. The sample 3 is subjected to a magnetic field H o while located in a microwave resonant cavity and an information pulse is applied through port 2 in the cavity. A light beam polarized in the direction of arrow 9 is directed through ports 4 and the sample 3. The occurrence of an echo pulse results in rotations of the plane of polarization of the light which are passed by a filter 7 arranged to reject light polarized in the direction 9, and the resultant light pulse strikes a photo-multiplier 8, |
