PURPOSE: A method for improving QoS(Quality of Service) on the Internet is provided to set high priority over real-time traffic when entering a network, and to set low priority over non real-time traffic, thereby improving communication QoS through the network. CONSTITUTION: A data terminal unit gives intermediate priority over present traffic when connecting to a subscriber network terminating set having a function of an edge router. The data terminal unit extracts characteristics of received traffic, and decides a characteristic of the traffic. The data terminal unit gradually gives higher priority over the traffic according to a decided result, or gives lower priority. The edge router is one of a digital subscriber line access multiplexer, a cable modem shelf, and a wireless LAN access point. The decided characteristics of the traffic are statistical characteristics.
