PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a hard film having excellent adhesion properties to a substrate surface and has high hardness and good water repellency. SOLUTION: The method for manufacturing the hard film comprising applying a sol composition prepared by mixing a sol containing hafnia and/or zirconia and a hydroxyl group-containing organic compound onto the substrate surface and subjecting the coating to hardening treatment, the method for manufacturing the hard film comprising applying the above sol onto the substrate surface subjected to surface treatment by a silane coupling agent, then subjecting the coating to the hardening treatment, and the method for manufacturing the hard film comprising applying the above sol onto the substrate surface subjected to the surface treatment by the silane coupling agent, then subjecting the coating to the hardening treatment, are provided.
