PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an external storage device for connecting a plurality of types of storage drives to a single serial bus interface of a computer at the same time. SOLUTION: The external storage device comprises interface means 51 connected to a serial bus 42, distribution means S22 for distributing commands of serial communication standards supplied from a computer 40 via the interface means 51 into a first storage drive 53 and a second storage drive 55 following parameters in the commands, converting means S24 for converting the commands of the serial communication standards into commands of parallel communication standards, first drive control means 52 to which the commands of the parallel communication standards are supplied for controlling the operation of the first storage drive 53, and second drive control means 54 to which the commands of the serial communication standards are supplied from the distribution means S22 for controlling the operation of the second storage drive 55.
