PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an application type magnetic recording medium which suppresses wear of a head and having both excellent C/N characteristics and durability. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium comprising a non-magnetic layer on a lower layer and a magnetic layer on an upper layer on one surface of a non-magnetic support, number average particle size of magnetic powder used for the magnetic layer is set as 10 to 80μm. In addition, alumina of which the number average particle size is 50 to 150 nm and of which the standard deviation of particle size distribution measured by microscopy is 10 nm or less is contained in the magnetic layer. In this case, it is set that the area occupancy of the alumina to be calculated from a visual field image by observing the surface of the magnetic layer by a scanning electron microscope is 0.3 to 1.0% and the standard deviation of the spatial distribution of alumina is three or less. In applying and forming the magnetic layer, a magnetic paint manufactured by using a biaxial continuous kneading device is used. This invention is especially suitably used for the magnetic recording medium by which a magnetic recording signal is reproduced by a reproduction head using a magnetoresistive effect element.
