PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive hydraulic tensioner which prevents a supporting member of a plunger from coming off under an action of hydraulic pressure. SOLUTION: This hydraulic tensioner comprises: a housing 2 which has a hole 2a inside through which hydraulic pressure is provided from the outside and a mounting hole 22 larger in the diameter than that of the hole 2a on the opening section of the hole 2a; a plunger 3 which is supported so as to be slidable in the hole 2a and has an end surface 3a forming a fluid chamber 20 between the hole 2a; a supporting member 5 which is pressed into the mounting hole 22 and is capable of supporting the front end side part of the plunger 3 so as to be slidable; a ratchet member 6 which is provided inside the mounting hole 22 and stops the plunger 3 from coming off cooperating with the supporting member 5; and a spring 4 which is arranged on the outer periphery of the plunger 3 and energizing the plunger 3 in the protruding direction. In this case, an end surface 5b of the supporting member 5 is not exposed in the hole 2a and liquid pressure in the fluid chamber 20 comes into no action on the supporting member 5, thus the supporting member 5 is prevented from coming off.
