PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a basic dimension measuring method for article packing capable of measuring the basic dimension of an article efficiently, accurately at a low cost without requiring skill. SOLUTION: In this basic dimension measuring method for article packing, three basic dimensions of the length, the width and the height for packing articles having various shapes are measured by utilizing a three-dimensional CAD device 2. The method is executed as follows: a bottom face b which is most stable when loaded on a plane is determined from a three-dimensional image of the article displayed on a display screen of a CAD by computer control, and side faces s orthogonal to the bottom face b and displaying the length are determined: the viewpoint of the display screen is turned up to the position facing to the side face s to display a side- face view image of the article; the maximum distance from the bottom face b on the side-face view image of the article is operated to calculate the height H; the distance between two vertical lines vertical to the bottom face b and sandwiching the side-face view image of the article is operated to calculate the length L; the viewpoint of the display screen is turned by 90 degrees to display a vertical-face view image of the article; and the distance between two straight lines parallel to the side face s and sandwiching the vertical-face view image of the article is operated to calculate the width W.
