A method for preparing a dried product of a natural substance, in particular deer antler, involves chilling an article of the substance to below 2°C so that the article becomes rigid, forming a series of partial incisions in the article whilst it remains chilled, and drying the partially incised article. The drying step is preferably freeze-drying. The process enables the preservation and presentation of the article of natural substance in a seemingly natural state of colour, odour, and physical appearance, whilst allowing a small piece to be broken or cut from the larger product piece for sale to a consumer at the weakness of a partial incision.
