<p>A method and apparatus for measuring distances comprises a supply of a discardable line and means for detecting the length and rate of dispensing of the line. In use, one end of the line is fixed to a reference location and the other end is transversed along the distance to be measured. The distance is instantaneously calculated from the movement of the line as it is dispensed. Related quantities such as speed and area can be derived therefrom. A signal derived from the distance measurement can be used to control apparatus requiring precise input relating to distance or speed of travel, such as agricultural or horticultural spraying apparatus. After completion of a given measurement, the dispensed line is discarded. Detection of length or rate of dispensing of the line may be effectd by reference to markers on the line.</p> |
