PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required by the user of an IP soft phone for responding to a call, after hearing the audible ringing signal of the IP soft phone. SOLUTION: When the user desires to respond to an incoming call or to terminate a call, the user sets a switch in a handset to a deactivated state. A sound card contained in a personal computer transmits a hook tone (signal sound) exceeding the audible range of human beings to the transmitter section of the headset. When the switch is in an activated state, the handset returns the hook tone to the sound card which converts the hook tone into digital information through retransmission. Consequently, the personal computer becomes able to detect the hook tone by means of informed software. When a manual switch is in deactivated state, the handset stops the retransmission of the hook tone to the sound card. The software discriminates whether the handset responds to the incoming call, upon detecting the absence of the hook tone.
