PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chain tensioning device capable of eliminating a large quantity of chain slacking to enable use of an endless chain, prolonging the chain lifetime, allowing the chain tightening function to act effectively as well in the normal as the reverse direction, relieving chain shocks, and capable of compensating the elongation of chain automatically. SOLUTION: The chain tensioning device for use in an inter-shaft chain transmitting device using a roller chain 6 is configured so that two small- diameter idling sprockets 5 and 5' are installed at the two ends of an arm 8 whose middle part is supported rotatably by a pin 9, one of which is engaged from the inside with the tightening side of the chain 6 and the other engaged from the outside with the slackening side of the chain 6. The middle part of the chain 8 is engaged with a moving means 15 and pulled in the direction of crossing the chain 6, and thereby forces are given to the tightening side chain and slackening side chain from the same direction so that the chain 6 is tightened and the large quantity, of slacking is eliminated.
