PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device free of unstable discharge operation from full-lighted condition to the put-off condition and capable of making stable dimming operation. SOLUTION: The discharge lamp lighting device is equipped with a discharge lamp 12 and a driver circuit 26 for the discharge lamp 12. The driver circuit 26 can vary the power supplied to the discharge lamp 12 and has a function to put off the discharge lamp 12 with a supply power value greater than that supply power value at which unstable discharge is generated in the discharge lamp 12.
