PURPOSE: A TFT-LCD(Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display) is provided to obtain high transmissivity, high aperture rate, fast response speed and wide viewing angle characteristics in a reflection mode, as well as to use an LCD without regard to power supply for driving a backlight lamp. CONSTITUTION: A TFT-LCD includes: an LC cell(10) having plural nematic LC molecules(12); an input alignment layer(21) and an output alignment layer(23) arranged at both sides of the LC cell; an input substrate(31) and an output substrate(33) of transparent material arranged with a cell gap(d) between the input and output alignment layers; plural couples of pixel electrodes(51) and counter electrodes(53) formed on the input substrate; and a polarizer(41) and an analyzer(43) arranged opposite to the input substrate and the output substrate respectively. The pixel electrodes and the counter electrodes are made by opaque reflecting material such as Ag, Al, AlNd or Cu with thickness of 500-5000 angstroms. A reflector is positioned between the pixel electrode and the counter electrode, and surface-roughened to promote beam scattering. When voltage higher than threshold value is fed to the electrodes(51,53), a fringe field is formed in the LC cell. The parallel aligned direction of the nematic LC molecules is changed. The LC cell has retardation of (2n+1)λ/2-(2n+1)λ/4. Herein, the λ is the wavelength of beam, and the n is 0 or a positive constant.
