PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently use HC freed from an HC adsorbing material with the help of the CH adsorbing material and a redox catalyst to further increase the cleaning rte of HC, CO and NOx contained in an exhaust gas. SOLUTION: This exhaust gas cleaning device comprise the HC adsorbing material and the redox catalyst formed of an oxygen occluding/freeing material and at least, either of Rh or Pd borne on the former, combined in series or in a double structure. It is clarified that the redox catalyst formed of the oxygen occluding/freeing material and at least, either of Rh or Pd borne on the former shows an extremely upgraded catalytic activity when the HC is not present. Consequently, the cleaning activity of the redox catalyst is significantly improved by making the HC adsorbing material adsorb the HC contained in the exhaust gas. |
