The retractable steering wheel assembly (1) for a motor vehicle has a dashboard (2) panel under which is a sliding table (7) on which a pivotally mounted steering wheel assembly is supported (10). The table is mounted just under the upper surface (2) of the dashboard. The table can occupy a space of approximately half of the dashboard. The table can be locked in its extended position, which can be rapidly released under a shock load.
