The assembly to monitor the movement and/or presence of a sliver of cotton and/or synthetic fibers, and especially at a drawing unit, has a movement path for the sliver through a space (10') at right angles to the direction (B) of sliver movement in succession within or outside the beam path (L) between the transmitter (25) and receiver (26). The sliver path is on a circle, oval or on a plane in a space (10') within the sliver guide (10). The guide space (10') has a circular cross section. The sliver guide (10) is at the entry table of a drawing unit, between the sliver cans and the feed rollers. The transmitter (25) and receiver (26) are at the inner mantle surface (10') of the guide space (10'), and can have a reflector between them. The sensor system can have at least one optoelectronic transmitter (25) and at least one optoelectronic receiver (26). The sensor signals are evaluated by an electronic signal processor. The beam path (L) is aligned horizontally at the sliver movement direction (B), at right angles, with the transmitter(s) and receiver(s) integrated into a unit at the sliver guide (10). The presence of the sliver and/or its movement is registered during the production process. The detection system has a self-learning function, where signal patterns are taken and stored for comparison during a learning phase or relating to a given episode. The sliver movement is registered when the signal pattern from the receiver (26) matches a stored pattern. The transmitter(s) and receiver(s) can be remote from the sliver guide (10), with optic fiber links to the sliver monitoring zone. During the evaluation of the signals, at the signal processor, machine parameters are taken into account, and it delivers separate signals to the machine to indicate sliver movement, in a common signal for all the receivers. The machine is braked and stopped on an interruption in the sliver movement signals, when validated by a plausibility control. The evaluation unit is linked electrically with the machine control. Each sliver has a separate guide (10), with at least one transmitter (25) and one receiver (26). The sliver guide can have two neighboring sliver guide units.
