The invention relates to a device for compensating axial thrust in a turbomachine having a compensating piston (9) disposed in a compensation chamber (6) and comprising at least one radial seal (7) operant between a rotor (2) and a housing (3) of said turbomachine in addition to a running wheel (4) secured to the rotor. The invention is characterized in that an axial seal (8) is provided between a side surface pertaining to the compensating piston (9) and said housing (3), the axial gap width is variable in the same manner as the axial displacement of the running wheel (4) occurring during operation and the compensating piston (9) is impinged upon by the pressure prevailing in the compensating chamber (6) according to the axial gap width.
