PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a method for growing plants by which the growth of the plants can efficiently be promoted without inhibiting the germination of the plants by selectively lighting two specific fluorescent lamps. SOLUTION: This method for growing plants comprises selectively lighting the first fluorescent lamp 1B that a luminescent layer 3b for emitting light within a blue color range is formed on the inner surface of a glass bulb 2b, and the second fluorescent lamp 1R that a luminescent layer 3r for emitting light within a red color range and inhibiting the emission of light within a range of about 650 to about 700 nm is formed on the inner surface of a glass bulb 3r. Therein, the second fluorescent lamp 1R is lighted for the first half of a plant growth period, and the first fluorescent lamp 1B is lighted for the latter half of the plant growth period. The second fluorescent lamp 1R is lighted out for the latter half of the plant growth period.
