PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vertical gear box for an motorcycle small and having limited dimensions, especially along the vertical direction. SOLUTION: This gear box is constituted, by storing a first return shaft 19 and a second return shaft 20 respectively supporting a first idle gear 17 and a second idle gear 18 to be engaged with a drive gear 16 keyed on a primary shaft 15 in a housing 12. Return gears 29, 47, to be engaged with a return tear 44 keyed on a secondary shaft 45, are keyed on the first return shaft 19 and the second return shaft 20. Clutches 21, 22, 48, 49, capable of locking either one of the first idle gear 17 or the second idle gear 18 are supported on the first return shaft 19 and the second return shaft 20 so that motion is allowed from the primary shaft 15 to the secondary shaft 45 at a specific gear ratio.
