PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enlarge the effective surface area of a sliding contact surface with a cam by forming an annular recess groove in the outer peripheral end in the top face of a tappet body, and projecting an annular projection on the lower surface of a shim opposite to the recessed groove to removably provide the shim on the top face of the tappet body. SOLUTION: An annular recessed groove 8 is formed in the outer peripheral end of the upper surface of the top wall 7a in a tappet body 7 formed of an aluminum alloy like a cylinder. On the upper surface of the top wall 7a of the tappet body 7, a hard metal-made shim 9 having the diameter substantially equal to the outer diameter of the tapper body 7 is removably placed, with an annular projection 10 projected on the lower surface rather nearer to the outer peripheral end fitted in the annular recessed groove 8 with a very little gap therebetween. The annular recessed groove 8 is provided rather nearer to the outer periphery end of the top wall 7a substantially opposite to the cylindrical part 7b of the tappet body 7. The effective surface area of a sliding contact surface with a cam in the shim 9 is enlarged to increase the lift amount of a valve.
