PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To conduct a thumbnail display at high speed and to easily erase and to rearrange the order of thumbnail displayed reduced pictures. SOLUTION: In a picture display device, reduced size pictures are formed in a real time and stored in a memory 14 when thumbnail pictures are displayed where the pictures are arranged for an overall observation. Then, registers Reg0, Reg1,... are provided for equivalent of a window and the location, the size of the window and the addresses in the memory 14, in which reduced pictures are stored, are stored in the registers Reg0, Reg1,.... A thumbnail picture is displayed while a reading is conducted for the reduced pictures from the memory 14 employing the information of the registers Reg0, Reg1,.... By changing the information in the registers only, the rearrangement of thumbnail pictures, an adding an erasing and changes of the size and the location of a window frame are conducted and enlarged/reduced display as well as a wipe in/wipe out are easily conducted.
