PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the physical properties of a resin produced by emulsion or suspension polymerization by using a surfactant having hydrophobic groups. SOLUTION: A surfactant of formula I is used. In the formula, R is a group of formula II (R1 and R2 are each a 4C or higher hydrocarbon group); R3 is a hydrocarbon group; X is H, 1-4C alkyl, or a hydrophilic group; and n is an integer of 1 or higher. R1 and R2 are each preferably 4-24C alkyl, the most preferable one being a 2-20C linear alkyl group. R3 is preferably 2-4C alkylene, still preferably ethylene. The (R3-O)n moiety is preferably a polyoxyalkylene chain containing 30-100 mol% oxyethylene groups. Preferably, n is 1-200. Examples of the hydrophilic group of X are sulfate (-SO3M), phosphate (-PO3M2), and carboxylate (-CH2COOM) groups (M is a metal or ammonium).
