First and second fluid-actuated working pistons(6,7) are provided in the steering gear housing and together act upon the steering shaft(5). The pistons are linear acting hydraulic pistons each with two working chambers(20,22;21,23). The pistons support a toothed rack(10) which is in permanent engagement with the teeth(11) on the steering shaft. The toothed racks are orientated to face each other in the steering housing and enclose the teeth of the steering shaft between them.
