Monitoring the condition of batteries used by a mobile radio telecommunications fleet

Mobile radio units 5 transmit information regarding the condition of their battery and a battery identifier to a data store 7. The data store is an automatically updated database of the current condition of batteries used by the mobile fleet. A fleet coordinator or manager can monitor, identify and discard any substandard batteries when they are returned. The transmitted information may also include a mobile radio unit identifier. The condition information (e.g. charge state) may also be displayed to the user of the mobile radio unit. The battery may have a processor to monitor its own condition and inform the mobile radio unit. Battery condition may be transmitted automatically at regular intervals or when registering with a new base station, when battery life falls below a threshold or when requested to do so by the data store.
