A plastic closure that includes a cap (22) having a base (30) with a peripheral skirt (32) defining a cap interior and threads (34) on the skirt for securing the closure to a container. A liner (20a, 20b or 20c) is secured to the interior of the cap, preferably by compression molding in situ. The liner consists essentially of a blend of a matrix polymer, a particulate barrier polymer and a compatibilizer. The heat and pressure of compression forms the particles of barrier polymer into platelets that are oriented essentially parallel to the plane of the disk.
