Hydrophilic article used as window pane or mirror

A hydrophilic article comprises a first layer of amorphous silica, and an amorphous metal oxide, e.g. titania or alumina, formed on a substrate. A second layer is formed on the first, and comprises a crystalline titania and amorphous metal oxide matrix, and a dispersion of ultrafine alumina or silica particles. An Independent claim is also included for a method of forming the above hydrophilic article, which comprises applying precursor solutions of the first and second layers to the substrate, and baking them.
