PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stage for forming a magnetic layer for improving the orientability of magnetic metallic particles and process for producing a magnetic recording medium having good electromagnetic conversion characteristics corresponding to high-density recording. SOLUTION: This process has at least a stage for forming the magnetic layer on the surface of a nonmagnetic base 3. This process has a stage for removing the moisture contained in a nonmagnetic base 3 and the gases, etc., adsorbed thereon by holding the nonmagnetic base 3 in a vacuum chamber 2 before the stage for forming the magnetic layer on the surface of the nonmagnetic base 3. The value of the relation (W/t) between the width (W) of the direction perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the nonmagneric base 3 wound to, for example, a roll form and the time (t) for holding the nonmagnetic base 3 within the vacuum chamber 2 in the stage for holding the nonmagnetic base 3 in the vacuum chamber 2 is specified to >=25 to >=50. The preferable vacuum degree in the vacuum chamber 2 is >=1×10<-5> to <=10<-1> Pa.
